Gerald P. Marshall | Obituary

Gerald P. Marshall, 75, of Columbia, died Dec. 29, 2019. He was born May 14, 1944, in Hamilton, Ohio. He was married to Linda, (nee Schneider), Marshall, who survives him. They were married Nov. 26, 1982, in Cahokia.

Jerry had worked at National City Stockyards, and later at Cahokia School District 187, where he retired. He was a member of American Legion Post #581, Columbia. He enjoyed fishing, but spent his time and energy coaching football and baseball locally, as over the years he was a fixture at BlueJay Football and Khoury League baseball games in Columbia. Attending his children’s athletic events was what he loved most. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Also, surviving are three sons, Jeff (Laura) Marshall, Jared (Ashley) Marshall, and Justin (Bridget Conrad) Marshall; daughter, Jodi (Russell) Bray; daughter-in-law, Judy Marshall, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Edna, (nee Neanover), Marshall Montanye, a son Mark Marshall, and brother Thomas ‘Tom’ Marshall.

Visitation will be noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 4 at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia.

Ethel S. Loehr | Obituary

Ethel S. Loehr (nee Gummersheimer), 85, of Waterloo, died Jan. 3, 2020, in Columbia. She was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Columbia, daughter of the late William and Alvina Gummersheimer (nee Kuni).

She was a member of Lost Valley Over 40 Group, Dupo Railroad Retirement.

She is survived by her children JoAnn (Rick) Holmes, Deborah (Steve) Heise and Leroy L. Jr. (Lynn) Loehr; grandchildren Colan Holmes, Toby (Susan) Holmes, Julie Stevenson, Johnathan Heise and Chris Loehr; great-grandchildren Axel Holmes, Delysia Loehr, Truett Loehr and Winton Loehr; sisters Olivia Matzenbacher and Evelyn (Roy) Weihl; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband LeRoy L. Loehr Sr.; sons Johnathan Loehr and Christopher Loehr (at birth); and sister Arline M. Kern.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until time of service Jan. 8 at Quernheim Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Pastor Patrick Poole officiating.

Interment will follow at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo.

Capt. Michael Gondro | Obituary

Capt. Michael Robert Gondro, 63 of Waterloo, died at Mercy Hospital in Saint Louis on Jan. 1, 2020. Born on April 23, 1956 in Saint Louis, he was the son of Michael A. Gondro and Roberta “Bobby” Bayne.

Capt. Michael Robert Gondro was a graduate of Mehlville High School and Missouri Southern. During college, he enjoyed playing football and was a member of the marching band. After college he became a Marine Merchant Captain in the Gulf of Mexico for supply vessels. After retirement, Capt. Mike became a proud bus driver of bus #1 for Waterloo School District. Capt. Michael was very musical and often enjoyed composing music, singing and playing his guitar and trombone. In his free time, he enjoyed woodcarving and golfing and most of all he loved spending quality time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Julia Gondro (nee Queen); parent, Michael A. Gondro and Bobby Bayne; sister Lesley (Scott) Paterson; aunt Dorothy “Snookie” Lueders; niece Abbey Hoerr; nephews Ross Paterson and Jake Paterson; cousin Patty Osborn; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Mary Lee Queen.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Robert and Eleanor Bayne; paternal grandparents Michael and Lucy Gondro; and cousins Stephen Keith, Robert Keith and Janet Descant.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5200 Lucas and Hunt Road (at Highway 70) St. Louis. 

Capt. Michael’s bus #1 will be used to transport attendees to Memorial Park Cemetery.  The bus will be leaving at 1 p.m. from the Bus Barn, 108 Westview Plaza Dr., Waterloo.  Space is limited, please call 314-919-6965 for reservations.

Nancy Ann Boren | Obituary

Nancy Ann Boren, 73, of Red Bud, died Jan. 5, 2020. She was born August 15, 1946, in St. Louis, daughter of the late Roy Edward and Jean (nee Sitzes) Belt. 

Nancy loved to travel, she enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was a “people person,” having never met a stranger. She also was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program with the Waterloo Senior Center. 

Surviving are her children, Terry Lafon Boren of St. Louis, Robin (Jamie) Siler of Columbia and Lea Ann (Ben) Weinhoff of Waterloo; brothers, Ron Belt of Granite City and Tommy Belt of Columbia; grandchildren Lauren (Brandon) Nolte, Hayden Siler, Brett (Emily) Marsala, Danielle Tockstein, Zack Weinhoff and Gage Weinhoff; great-grandchild Jack Marsala; along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by sisters-in-law Jo Belt and Jeannine Belt.

Visitation will be held Jan. 11 from 1-3 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia.

Kenneth Schmidt | Obituary

Kenneth John Joseph Schmidt, 70, of Maeystown,  died Jan. 5, 2020, in St. Louis, MO. He was born Oct. 19, 1949, in Belleville, son of the late Orville and Josephine (nee Ritter) Schmidt.

He was a member of Waterloo VFW, avid hunter, D&B Club, Maeystown Sportsman Club and gifted taxidermist. He loved his family and especially his granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife Jerri (nee Flatt) Schmidt; daughter Jamye (Adam) Hemken; granddaughter Kendall Hemken; sisters Linda (John) Kessler and Charlotte (Dave) Hoock;  niece Natasha (Jeff) Wolman, great nieces Ari and Ella Wolman; nephews Todd Schmidt and Scott (Lesliey) Schmidt.

Kenneth is preceded in death by his son Kenneth John Joseph “Kenny” Schmidt II; brother Orville Joseph “Ceasar” Schmidt; and nephew Mike Schmidt.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Jan. 8 and 8:30 a.m. until time of service Jan. 9 at Quernheim Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 9:30 a.m. Jan. 9 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Pastor Jonathan Peters officiating.

Interment will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Gerard A. Lavoie | Obituary

Gerard “Jerry” A. Lavoie, 81, of Columbia, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis on Jan. 5, 2020. Born on Oct. 20, 1938 in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of Armand H. and Laurette Lavoie and they precede him in death. Jerry was also preceded in death by a brother, Lenny Lavoie and a granddaughter, Alicia McClain. 

Jerry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was a Boy Scout Master in Troop 425. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Columbia, and the VFW in Columbia. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, playing bingo and watching baseball. Jerry was a dear friend to many and will be missed by all who knew him. 

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years, LaVerne Lavoie of Columbia, whom he married on Sept. 27, 1958; children Mike (Patty) Lavoie, Ron (Kara) Lavoie and Cheryl (Don) Johnson; siblings Ronald (Kathy) Lavoie, Rick (Linda) Lavoie, Patty (Bob) Charest and Linda (the late Ron) Thipatot; grandchildren Brandon (Julie) Lavoie, Brooke (Calvin) Barton, Brittany (Dan) Lavoie-Green, Kaila Lavoie and Chrystal (Casey) Bradshaw; great-grandchildren: Colette Lavoie, Alaina Barton, Grace Barton, Toby Bradshaw, Serenity Bradshaw, Charlene Brooks and Daniel Hillburn. Jerry also leaves behind many beloved friends. 

Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Jan. 11 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Columbia 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. 

Interment will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Fairview Heights.

Harold H. Nobbe, 91, of Waterloo, died Jan. 2, 2020, in Waterloo. He was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Waterloo.

He was a member of the Waterloo Fire Department; Fox Lake; and Coon Lake.

He is survived by his son Dr. Dennis Nobbe; sister Ellen Bode; brother Carl H. Nobbe; and sister-in-law Lillian (Norman) Eggemeyer.

Harold is preceded in death by his wife Barbara A. Nobbe (nee Keim); son Michael Lee Nobbe; brothers Orville Nobbe, Paul Nobbe, and Glenn “Pete” Nobbe; sister Audrey Fauth; sisters-in-law Carol, Mary Lou and Annette Nobbe; brothers-in-law Dick Fauth and Louie Bode.

William S. Mygatt | Obituary

William S. Mygatt, 86, of Waterloo, and formerly of Columbia, died Jan. 10, 2020 at Red Bud Regional Care, Red Bud. He was born March 30, 1933, in Pine Bluff, Ark, son of the late Ernest and Daisy (nee Jacks) Mygatt. He was married to Flora Mae, nee Ballard, Mygatt, who survives him. They were married Sept. 27, 1952.

Bill had earned his bachelor’s degree from SIU Carbondale and his master’s degree from SIU Edwardsville. He started his teaching career in Roxana, where he had also coached football. He was a former principal and then superintendent for Columbia Unit  School District 4. He was a Mason for 65 years, and a member of Columbia Blue Lodge, 474, A.F. & A.M., where he had served as Past Master and Grand Lecturer, Bethany United Methodist Church, Columbia and American Legion Post 581, Columbia. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. 

Also surviving are his children Cheryl (Larry) Champa of East Alton, Stan (Jackie) Mygatt of Sikeston, Mo. and Deborah (Donald) Ries of Fults; grandchildren Amanda (Keith) Armon, Jennifer (Vinay) Kumar, Scott (Stacy) Mygatt, Sean (Timberly) Mygatt, Rachel Mygatt, Kimberly (David) Grimes and Timothy (Raphielle Franklin) Ries; 17 great-grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by half brother Marion ‘Mike’ Mygatt.

Visitation will be Jan. 18 10 a.m. noon at Bethany United Methodist Church, Columbia. 

Memorial Services will follow, Pastor Allen Miller officiating.

Brittany and Ben Rongey of Waterloo are proud to announce the birth of their son, Weston McClane Rongey. 

Weston was born 1:28 p.m. Dec. 29, 2019 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces. 

Weston is the grandson of the late Michelle Modglin and the late Lori Hoernis and Greg Eitzenhefer. Weston’s great-grandmother is the late Mary Eitzenhefer-Tune.

George O’Bryan | Obituary

George O’Bryan, 97, of Red Bud, Illinois, died Jan. 9, 2020 at Red Bud Regional Hospital, Red Bud. He was born to the late Thomas L and Mary Ann (nee Ervin)  O’Bryan on March 23, 1922 in Blue Mound.  

He was married to Joyce O’Dell on Sept. 7, 1957; she preceded him in death on August 7, 2011.

He had been the office supervisor for Illinois Power in Baldwin for 32 years.  

He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud, V.F.W. Post #6632 in Red Bud and the 12th Armored Division Association. 

He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and University of Illinois fan. He enjoyed playing the organ and harmonica. George and Joyce were one of the founding member of the North County Country Club. George also wrote a column in the Hellcat News for the 66th Army Infantry Division for many years.  

He was a WWII Army Veteran. George was a P.O.W during the war and a recipient of the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.  

He is survived by children Dennis (Regan) O’Bryan of Burlington, W.V. and Kelly (Rex) Roehrkasse of Red Bud; grandchildren Jeanine (John) Henderson, Patti O’Bryan, Rhonda and Matthew Tustian; great-grandchildren Ethan and Ella Henderson and Landon O’Bryan; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is also preceded in death by son Terry O’Bryan and siblings Juanita Ross, Dorothy Rees, Thomas O’Bryan, Mary Lou Rafferty and Margaret O’Bryan.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Jan. 13 and 11 a.m. o 1 p.m. Jan. 14 at Pechacek Funeral Homes, Red Bud.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Jan. 14 at the funeral home, Red Bud, Rev. Cory Hartz officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Peter United Church of Christ Cemetery, Red Bud.

Donna M. Goehner | Obituary

Donna M. Goehner (nee Barra), 78, of Waterloo, formerly of O’Fallon, died Jan. 8, 2020 at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis.

Donna received her Ph.D. in higher education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale; she was Past President of the Illinois Library Association and was Dean of Libraries at Western Illinois University in Macomb. She loved to read, making her job that much more of a joy. She was a member of the Dean’s Council of Western Illinois University and the Rotary Club of Macomb. She enjoyed traveling and had a soft spot for animals. Donna was a loving, caring, outgoing woman who formed many wonderful friendships throughout her life, but above all she enjoyed spending time with her family. 

Surviving is her husband of 58 years, George Goehner; daughter Michelle (Anthony Kris) Gundlach of Waterloo; and granddaughter Hannah Gundlach of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Elizabeth Barra (nee Cseke), and her brother Robert J. Barra.

Visitation will be held 6-8:00 PM on Jan. 13 at Schildknecht Funeral Home, 301 S. Lincoln Ave., O’Fallon.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 14 at the funeral home with Rev. Don Long officiating. 

Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights.

Leroy  H. Hartmann, 85, of Waterloo, died Jan. 13, 2020, in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 6, 1935, in Baldwin, son of the late Paul and Elizabeth (nee Guebert) Hartmann.

He is a member of St. Paul UCC Waterloo, retired from Dierberg’s.

He is survived by his wife Ardell Hartmann (nee Wetzler); daughter Julie (Scott) Upchurch; grandson Michael Upchurch; brothers Freeman (Nancy) Hartmann and Don (Shirley) Hartmann; sisters Elizabeth (Karl) Phegley and Vera Lee (Kenneth) Kern; uncle Albert (Viola) Guebert; nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Leroy is preceded in death by son Jeffrey C. Hartmann; and brothers Oliver, Gilbert, Paul Jr. and Richard Hartmann.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Jan. 16 and 10 a.m. until time of service Jan. 17 at Quernheim Funeral Home.

Roider 50th Anniversary

Leland and Sheila Roider of Waterloo celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 9, 2020.

Leland Roider and the former Sheila Rea were married at St. Martin of Tours in Washington Park by Fr. MacPherarson.

The met on a blind date in the summer of 1965.

Leland Roider retired from Lee’s Trim Shop in 1994. He is a 1967 graduate of Waterloo High School. Sheila Roider retired from Allsup Inc. in 2016.

She is a 1969 graduate of St. Theresa’s Academy. A 50th reunion from St. Theresa’s Academy celebration was held Aug. 24, 2019.

The Roiders are members of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo.

They have three children: Leland C. (Talisha) Roider II of Glen Carbon, and Sampson Harland Roider and Rosalie Annalynn Roider of Waterloo. Grandchildren are Shelby W. Culpepper Jr., Skyler Lee James Culpepper, Savanna Lee Cawvey and Samantha Marie Cawvey.  

Doris W. Baiter | Obituary

Doris W. Baiter, 83, of Columbia, died Jan. 14, 2020. She was born Oct. 18, 1936, in McNairy County, Tenn. She was married to James Baiter, who survives her. They were married Oct. 23, 1954, in East St. Louis.

Doris was a homemaker. 

Also surviving are her children Anne (Michael) Beck of Concord, Jamey Baiter of Jerseyville and Steven Baiter of Columbia; grandchildren Mekelle (Dustin) Neathery and James (Ashley) Beck; great-grandchildren Aiden and Avery Neathery, Brooklyn, Kendrick, Jace and Hadlee Beck; brother, James Wilson of Columbia; sister Shirley Mathews of Waterloo, along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Lenis (nee Broadway)Wilson; son, James Baiter Jr. and daughter Cathy Baiter.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Jan. 16 at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia. 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Jan. 17 at Lawlor Funeral Home. 

Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Belleville.

Hope Alexis Campos | Obituary

Hope Alexis Campos, 14, of Columbia, born on April 28, 2005 in Creve Coeur, Mo., died Jan. 9, 2020 at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

Hope was a freshman at Columbia High School, where she was involved in the band, color guard and choir. She loved drawing and singing.

Surviving are her mother Holly J. Catanzaro of Columbia; father Juan Luis Campos-Angeles of Mexico; siblings Michael (Ashley) Craig of Mascoutah and Amira Jazmin Campos of Columbia; maternal grandparents Roger (Theresa) Catanzaro of Columbia; paternal grandmother Feliciana; and great-grandmother Margaret Catanzaro of Columbia. Hope was an aunt, cousin and friend to many.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather.

A memorial service will be held 2-4 p.m. Jan. 19 at Braun Family Funeral Home, 265 Quarry Road, Columbia.

Funeral services will begin at 4 p.m. with Pastor Duane Willeford officiating.

Private cremation was held.

“Jim” Weiser | Obituary

“Jim” Malcolm James Weiser, 94, of Columbia, Illinois, formerly from Owaneco, Illinois died January 10, 2020 at his home. He is survived by his wife Treva of 71 years, and 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren survive. One son Jim Jr. (Dorothy) and two grandsons, JC (Chandra) and John (Mallorie) live in Columbia, Illinois. He served in the US Marine Corp from September 1943 to July 1946. Jim will be buried in Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.

Jenny Baldwin and David Luepke of Champaign have announced their engagement.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Steve and Carleen Baldwin of Waterloo. She is a 2010 graduate of Waterloo High School and 2014 graduate of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently a congressional aide for U.S. Congressman Rodney Davis (IL-13).

The prospective groom is the son of John and Lorna Luepke of Courtland, Minn. He is a 2007 graduate of Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School and a 2010 graduate of Southwest Minnesota State University with a Masters in Business Administratio from the University of South Dakota. He is currently a business relationship manager for AgQuest Financial Services.

The couple are planning a May 2, 2020, wedding.

John Bagsby | Obituary

John Bernard Bagsby, Jr., 68, of Waterloo, died in his home in Waterloo on Jan. 15, 2020 surrounded by family and friends. He was born Dec. 23, 1951, in E. St. Louis, son of the late John B. and Imogene (nee Ramage) Bagsby. He was a 1969 graduate of Gibault Catholic High School and later attended Belleville Area College.

John was an avid fisherman and baseball fan. He spent many enjoyable hours with his son and friends on the lakes and rivers throughout the US, Canada and Gulf and watching his St. Louis Cardinals with his granddaughters. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him as a wonderful son, father, brother and friend. Always having a twinkle in his eye, John was our family’s ‘rock’ and someone who we could always depend on.

He is survived by his daughter Charity Bagsby Cotton (Dominique Cavalier); son Andrew Bagsby; granddaughters Aniesa Bagsby (Jammal) Ricketts and Jaycee Cotton; sister Terry Chambers (Rob Prince); nephews Tim Chambers (Buffie Jackson) and Dr. Deren (Dr. Liz) Bagsby; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins on the Bagsby and Ramage sides and too many life-long friends to even be counted, including David Lutman, Sr., Russell Lieb and Kenny Goodman.

He was also preceded in death by sisters Janet Lee Bagsby and Pamela Jean Bagsby Meister.

Memorial visitation is 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 25 at Quernheim Funeral Home.

John Link | Obituary

John Randal Link, 58, of Waterloo, died peacefully on Jan. 15, 2020 at Mercy Hospital South, St. Louis. He was born Sept. 27, 1961, in St. Louis, son of the late Cecil L. and Cecilia (nee Caito) Link. 

John was married to Lisa Link (nee Mason) for 30 years and they have a beautiful amazing daughter named Payton who he adored. John loved all things golfing, hunting and fishing. He was full of life, never met a stranger and could make anyone laugh.

He is also survived his brother Dale (Chris Hudgens) Link; sisters-in-law Rhonda (Rick) Gray and Dawn Mason; niece Kim (David) Bosler; great nieces, Bailey and Reese, his uncle, Jim (B.) Link, he is also survived by cousins, relatives and numerous friendships that he cherished dearly.

The family asks that you spend time with your children and loved ones and to make a toast to enduring friendships lifelong and beyond. That is what John would wish.

Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 19  at Lawlor Funeral Home, Columbia.

Celebration of life services will be held 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at the funeral home with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. 

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to a fund for his daughter Payton.

Betty J. Knobloch-Ramer (nee Fults), 87, of Waterloo, died Jan. 15, 2020, in St. Louis. She was born April 20, 1932, in Maeystown, daughter of the late Henry J. & Marie D. (nee Schoen) Fults.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar Sodality and Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children Carlyle Knobloch Jr., Carla (Michael) Grosvenor, and Carleen Mueller; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by her first husband Carlyle Knobloch Sr.; second husband Donald Ramer; and sisters Ruth Jarvis and Dorothy Schreder.

Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Jan. 21 and 9 a.m. until time of service Jan. 22 at Quernheim Funeral Home

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Jan. 22 at Quernheim Funeral Home in Waterloo, Father Osang Idagbo C.M. officiating.

Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Madonnaville.
